Alcohol and Drug Policy
Purpose
To make sure the effects of drugs and alcohol have no place in the healthy, safe environment we provide for all team members and customers.
Policy/Procedure
We’re committed to maintaining standards and continuously improving occupational health and safety.
If you’re found to have a substance abuse problem, you won’t be allowed to work in a capacity that your manager feels might pose a risk to the safety and well-being of yourself, team members or customers.
We recognise that alcohol and drug dependency can be treated, and we’ll help you take reasonable steps to overcome your addiction if needed.
Alcohol
You must not be affected by alcohol while you’re working or representing the company, both for safety and productivity reasons.
When you’re driving a company vehicle, you must not drink alcohol or be over the legal blood or breath alcohol limits for driving.
You’re not allowed to use, sell, distribute or possess alcohol on company premises, unless your store manager or senior management has okayed it ahead of time.
It’s up to you to make sure you don’t drink alcohol to excess at company or work-related functions.
At such events, the company expects you to keep up standard behaviour and conduct, as well as follow all laws around consuming alcohol.
Drugs
You can take your medication at work if it’s been prescribed by a medical practitioner or it’s lawful over-the counter medication. Otherwise, use of any other medication or drug is strictly forbidden.
You’re never allowed to use, sell, distribute or possess illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia on company premises.
You must not be affected by drugs while you’re working, representing the company or driving a company vehicle.
Breach of Policy
If you’re found to have breached this policy, disciplinary action will be taken.
If you have a dependency problem, then we may decide to recommend OCP counselling. This is at our discretion, and first we’ll take into account whether or not you work in a safety-sensitive area or if you’ll be able to keep doing your job properly with counselling.
If nothing improves and your job performance suffers to a certain level, you might meet disciplinary action, including dismissal.
