Leading On Tools - The 5 Whys

The 5 Whys Overview

A simple yet effective problem solving tool to help get past the symptom of a problem or issue and find the root causes.

When faced with why, the first answer usually addresses the most obvious aspects of the problem or situation but when asked repeatedly it forces us to think more deeply about why something might have happened.

It can be applied in a coaching context to help understand the cause of a certain behavior or issue and how to address it in conjunction with other tools in a non-confrontational way.
