Managing your career and employment

Your employment agreement

Everyone has an employment agreement which sets out the terms of employment between you and The Warehouse at the time of your recruitment or any subsequent changes to your employment with us.

Refer to your employment agreement in the first instance for any questions about the terms and conditions of your employment. If you still don’t have the answer, ask your Manager.

A note on work eligibility

You are responsible for making sure you can work lawfully in NZ and that you share any work permit details with us upon your recruitment.  If any conditions on your work permit change, you must let us know immediately.

A note on flexible working arrangements

We try to manage flexible working arrangements for our Team Members on a case by case basis. These arrangements can be made informally between you and your Manager or formally by applying under the Flexible Working Arrangements Act (if it is in relation to your responsibilities for caring for another person). Please discuss with your Manager any flexible working needs you have such as working different hours. To follow the formal process, please refer to the Team Member Guide or ask your Manager for help.

Refer to Guide to Flexible workplace in this Knowledge Base or check with your Manager

Accessing learning and development opportunities

We provide many opportunities for you to learn in your role or to prepare for your next role with us. These opportunities are a mix of on the job learning modules and coaching, training courses, work assignments, and secondments.

We encourage you to take advantage of learning and development opportunities to further your career with us - so you can become an expert in your role or step into another role with us. By driving your own development you can get the most out of the opportunities we offer and really build your career with us.

Discuss your development with your Manager, determining the opportunities for you. Make the most of the opportunities available, and we will support you to achieve your goals.

In SSO we have a Learning and Development Calendar. In stores we have the Retail Learning Pathway - a combination of modules, development guides and online programmes that are available to everyone.

Refer to the Learning and Development Calendar in this Knowledge Base or check with your Manager

Travel

Travel Expenses

When your role requires you to travel on our behalf, we want you to be safe, use our preferred suppliers, and manage any costs.

All travel requests should be booked through our approved travel agency, including flights, accommodation and rental car needs.  All travel requires your Manager’s prior approval.

Flights are to be economy and, where safe and time reasonable, be at the lowest overall cost.  Where the most sensible flight has airpoints you can keep the airpoints but need to cover at your own cost, the personal membership of a reward scheme.

The agency will usually ensure that your accommodation provides dinner and breakfast. If you need to purchase meals you may do so with your P card, or if you do not have a P Card, by paying for the meal and claiming the expense later. The maximum amount to be spent (including beverages) should be $50 for dinner. Any additional costs claimed will be at the discretion of your Manager.

If you stay with family or friends while travelling, you can claim $30 per night to give your host.

For partners and family members to travel with you on business or once your business is complete, it must be at your cost and with your Manager’s prior approval.

Use of your vehicle

When you use your vehicle for business travel, provided you have your Manager’s prior approval, you can claim a travel allowance per kilometre for distance travelled beyond your normal distance to work. Where it is more economical to hire a rental car this should be used. Mileage is claimed through MyPay.

If you are involved in an accident and your insurer declines the claim because your vehicle was used for business-related purposes, we will cover the claim and pay any excess over and above your normal excess at our discretion.

Refer to our PCard policy separately if you are eligible to hold a PCard Refer to our Mileage policy for the current reimbursement rate & Expense claim forms or check with your Manager

A note on pay for Team Members when travelling away for training

When you attend a training session with us, you will be paid:
  • your normal rostered hours on the training days and any training hours extra to this and also any additional travel time (less your normal travel time to and from work) and
  • any use of your personal vehicle to travel to and from the training (for the distance over and above getting to and from your normal place of work).

Study Scholarship Programme

To help you “Be the Best You Can Be” – we will support you to fulfill your potential through learning that adds to your retail career at The Warehouse.
The Warehouse is leading the way in promoting retail as a career by supporting the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management Degree offered through Massey University. You will be able to apply to the company for a scholarship that will pay your course costs to study this degree full or part time. We offer financial and other assistance for team members to participate in this degree. These scholarships will be advertised across the company in September each year. You will be able to find the scholarship application form on icRed once the scholarships are advertised, along with criteria explaining who is eligible to apply for a scholarship. The company will make a set number of scholarships available each year. A panel of business leaders will review applications and award the scholarships at their discretion.
